What is Goth?

So we meet again, little snarklings.

In this post, I will be discussing one thing and one thing only:

What is Goth and why are we deemed to be so “evil”?

Well, according to UrbanDictionary.com, Goth means a lot of things. Here are the definitions that they give:

1) A Germanic tribe who invaded the late Roman empire along with the vandals, visi goths etc and actually became more civilized afterwards.

2) An building style used in medieval times and later in Victorian times.

2) A literature style of which Dracula and their supernatural horrors were written in.

3) A music genre that came about in the 80's as an off shoot of punk.

4) A subculture of people who originally listened to Goth music. Now has increased to fit Industrial and Black/Death metal followers. Goths are typically seen as morbid, wearing black clothes almost all of the time, and wearing makeup regardless of sex. Also seen to be more open minded to other cultures, sexualities etc.

5) Prententious people who listen to Nu metal who think they are goths but really teenagers who know nothing of music.

Well, answering that question is difficult, seeing as how every person thinks something different about Goth. I know that Goth is a subculture, meaning that it is a culture within a culture (by my own definition) and that it is a large cluster of people who feel comfortable within one another’s presence. There is no one thing that defines what you must do in order to be a Goth. People who are Goth all have different musical tastes, believe in different gods and religions, lead different lifestyles, have different jobs, hobbies and ideas of how to dress.

Now, I will tell you what Goth IS NOT.

Goth folks are not evil.

Goth folks do not offer virgin sacrifices and drink blood (I hate it when people confuse me for being a vampire- I do not sparkle whenever I’m out in the sun.)

Goth folks are (for the most part) not depressed and do not hole themselves up in their rooms to write Edger Allen Poe-like poems and short stories. (If this last tidbit describes you, do me a favor and take all those poems and short stories that you’ve written and burn them. Do not publish them. Trust me, one day when you’re in your seventies, you’ll be thanking me.) if you are depressed, then it’s just a temporary disbalance with your hormones. It’ll come and go, but if it’s always there, then I’d suggest going to see a doctor.

Goth folks don’t always wear black clothing. Take me for example- I wear a bright t shirt with black jeans, combat boots, my trademark hair colors, and my usual overly dark and dramatic makeup, and I still look like a baby soft Goth. There are a number of people out there who aren’t “all out Goths” like Marilyn Mason. Color is color. Period.

Goth folks don’t always listen to heavy metal. I don’t really care for loud bass and pounding drums- I’m more into classical and musical theater then any other types of music, though I do make rare exceptions for pop. As I said before, Goth folks listen to many different types of music.

Goth folks don’t worship the devil. I am a Christian and I worship one God, and I really don’t think that I’m going to rot in hell forevermore because I wear funky clothing, have color in my hair and watch scary horror movies. The same goes towards other Goths- over here, we may have some Buddhist Goths, and over there we may have some Jews Goths. Like with music tastes, Goths come in all kinds of religions. And just because you wear a pentagram does not make you a Satanist. (The pentagram actually has a fascinating history- I shall dive into that later.)

Goth folks are always angry and homicidal? False. Goth folks are just like other folks out there- we have feelings and need to express ourselves. Just because you see someone with multiple piercings ranting and raving at someone doesn’t mean that they’re going to kill whoever they’re arguing with. Everyone gets upset- so do Goth folks. That doesn’t mean that we’re all going to turn into serial murderers. And violence? Everyone get’s violent at one point or another, whether it be on a football field or in a bedroom. Once more, Goth folks have feelings and unless I read the ten amendments wrong, we do have the right to express our feelings.

Goth folks DO NOT think that their vampires. Halloween, yes, costume parties, sure. But believe it or not, there is actually something called vampire syndrome, (which is, from what I have researched) where a person has the idea that they are an actual vampire drilled into their minds. This is a psychological disease in which they think they are something that they are not. I don’t go around sucking people’s blood from their necks, alright? I don’t spend every spare moment of my free time in a cemetery and I don’t avoid the sun (but it does give me a monster headache.)

Most Goth folks don’t practice witchcraft. I mean, there are some that practice Wicca. There are some people out there who can speak to the dead (look at Theresa Caputo, she is truly amazing!) and then there are people who can do some really cool things (aura reading, dowsing, mediumship, precognition, psychometry, to name a few things that I’ve came across.) Witchcraft is a mysterious and fascinating subject and many people have given it a try (though they were proved to be unsuccessful.)

Until we meet again. In next week’s post, I shall be going over the different styles of Gothic styles.
